`Imagine, the current head of a nuclear state comes to German territory and is captured. What does this mean? It is a declaration of war against Russia,` Deputy Chairman of the Russian National Security Council Dmitry
Mr. Medvedev further warned that if that scenario occurs, Russia will use all available measures to target Germany, the German Prime Minister’s office and other targets.
The above warning was issued after German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann announced that Germany would comply with this order and would be obliged to arrest the Russian President and hand him over to the ICC if Mr. Putin set foot on German territory.
To date, Germany is the only country to publicly announce that it will enforce the ICC’s order to arrest Mr. Putin.
On March 17, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin and Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of `illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of children from the territory
This is not the first time the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for a serving head of state, but the agency has never made such a move against the leader of a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia does not recognize the authority of the ICC and considers the court’s decisions invalid.
According to Mr. Peskov, the ICC arrest warrant shows hostility aimed at Russia and President Putin personally.
On March 20, Mr. Medvedev warned that the ICC ruling would have serious consequences for international law.
He said that the ICC decision also means the collapse of the foundation and principles of international law.
