In a Washington Post interview published on March 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the White House had asked Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries.
However, he emphasized that Ukraine will continue such attacks if the US does not provide Kiev with more modern weapons.
`We used our drones (for cross-border raids). No one can tell us you can’t do that. Without an air defense system to protect
According to local media, after a period of developing long-range attack capabilities, Ukraine began to increase UAV attacks on Russian oil refinery systems in recent weeks, including the infrastructure of Rosneft Corporation.
Ukrainian sources said that in the recent raid campaign, Kiev targeted at least 12 Russian oil refineries.
In addition, oil and petrochemical products play an important role in generating income for Russia.
However, after Russia responded with attacks on power plants across Ukraine, Mr. Zelensky said that attacking Russian territory was a form of deterrence because Kiev had exhausted the anti-aircraft missiles that the West provided.
Ukraine admitted that it would have to withdraw its troops if it lacked US aid
In the interview, Mr. Zelensky once again urged Western allies and partners to increase aid.
He admitted that without US aid, Ukrainian forces would have to gradually retreat.
`Without US support, that means we have no air defense systems, no Patriot missiles, no jammers for electronic warfare, no 155 mm artillery shells,` he said.
He added: `That means we will have to retreat step by step. We are looking for ways not to have to retreat.`
Late last year, US President Joe Biden proposed an additional aid package of more than $60 billion for Ukraine.
Mr. Zelensky said that Ukraine is overcoming the missile shortage by using domestic weapons and air defense systems.
